When her estranged daughter is killed in an auto accident, Georgia a genteel southern lady learns that the girl was married to a black man, also killed, and had a six-year-old daughter from the marriage. Bound to do the right thing for her newly discovered granddaughter, Georgia brings the child back to live with her in her small southern town, where she is forced to confront her friends' biases as well as her own.
