The legend of Hollywood, Cleopatra made in 1963, featured more drama off-screen than it did on. With a massively over-budget production (from $2m to $44m), Liz Taylor almost dying during filming, the romance between Taylor and Burton (which ruined both their marriages and reached from the Vatican to US Congress), bankrupting 20th Century Fox and led to some involved never working in Hollywood again.

The premise of the film is a love triangle between the Egyptian queen Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor), Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) and Marc Antony (Richard Burton). It is essentially told in two parts; the first being the one to watch in that it traces Cleopatra's dealings with Caesar which ultimately lead to his downfall; the second having no real story but tells of Cleopatra's return to Rome with a monumental procession that is one of the most grandiose pieces of filmmaking produced (there were no computer generated extras in those days).

Cleopatra is a Film programme that first aired in 1963 and has been rated PG.
