In the year 2027, England is ruled by a fascist dictator. The legal system has collapsed, discrimination is rife and no children have been born for 18 years. Humans are dying out.

Against this grim backdrop, penpusher Theo Faron (Clive Owen) struggles to get out of bed. After all, what's the point? And then ex-lover Julian (Julianne Moore) turns up. Theo hasn't seen her for 20 years, but she's not back to trade memories, she wants Theo to get a young girl safely out of England - a young pregnant girl called Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey).

Alfonso Cuarón's adaptation of the PD James novel makes breathtaking viewing thanks to Emmanuel Lubezki's award-winning cinematography. His England mirrors the feelings of its depressed inhabitants, although the appearance of Kee injects hope into a plot which is ultimately bittersweet.

Highly recommended.
