When young Cal is involved in the murder of an RUC officer, he is drawn to the man's widow, Helen Mirren, in a gentle relationship that slowly turns to love. But against the background of the Northern Irish Troubles, such a relationship is destined to be caught up in Catholic-Protestant rivalries.
