Broken Arrow (1950)
Written by Elliott Arnold, Albert MaltzDirected by Delmer DavesRunning Time: 93 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1950Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: USAFilmed in ColourBy the monumental year of 1870 there had already been over 10 years of cruelty and war between new American settlers and the original Americans - the Cochise's Apache Indians. A former military soldier named Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) (who readily fought in this cruel and meaningless, selfish battle) rescues and saves the life of a young Apache child which makes him realise that this race of people are in fact human - and not the savages that they were all once told. Soon he determines that he will use this chance to become an ambassador of the Apache. Against all the odds, and in his lonely mission into Cochise's stronghold opens talks between him and the chief. Now, in due time, the President sends General Howard (Basil Ruysdael) to the stronghold with orders to end peace. However, even with Jeffords' luck, the deep grievance and hatred on both sides of this bloody battle make tragic failure all too likely... A superb film - and that's coming from someone who isn't keen on Westerns. When is Broken Arrow next on TV?
