After finishing his Godfather trilogy, Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola sunk his teeth into adapting Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula.

Starring Gary Oldman (pictured) in one of his most renowned roles and featuring the likes of Keanu Reeves,Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins, Coppola's version of the gothic vampire tale is a lavish visual feast and, not surprisingly, scooped three Academy Awards for effects, costume design and make-up.

Young lawyer Jonathan Harker (Reeves) is seconded to a remote village in the mountains of Transylvania to conduct legal matters for Count Dracula's purchase of Carfax Abbey in England.

When the Count is shown a photograph of Harker's betrothed, Mina Murray (Ryder), he is convinced that she is the reincarnation of his dead wife - his one true love. The Count imprisons Harker and travels to Britain to meet her.

In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina's closest friend Lucy Westenra (Sadie Frost) while attempting to awaken in Mina the memories of her past life. Discovering that Lucy herself has become a vampire, her friends set out to drive Dracula out, with obsessed vampire slayer Van Helsing (Hopkins) leading the hunt.

Coppola rarely makes films that aren't on an epic scale. Here, he offers up a full-blooded portrait of the immortal vampire while sustaining a heady mix of fear, romance and bloodthirsty gore.
