The synopsis given here is inaccurate but nevertheless the actual narrative is fairly elliptical and of minor importance compared to the battles of will and issues of morality. Unfortunately it's the heavy-handed and fairly unsuccessful emphasis on character and local colour which means this film fails to live up to his best work.
