Battle For Haditha (2007)
Written by Nick Broomfield, Marc HoeferlinDirected by Nick BroomfieldProduction Year: 2007Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: UKFilmed in ColourBattle for Haditha, the latest feature film from acclaimed filmmaker Nick Broomfield (Ghosts), for Channel 4, is based on a real-life story of violence and retribution in Iraq. The film is the centrepiece of Channel 4's Happy Birthday Iraq season. On 19 November 2005, Iraqi insurgents bombed a US Marines convoy, resulting in the death of their most popular officer. Enraged by their loss, his young squadron went in search of the insurgents, violently storming a series of houses in the village of Haditha. In total, 24 people were killed, many of them women and children. This is a war film about ordinary people in an impossible situation. Stories from all sides are brought to the forefront: the young, inexperienced US Marines, many of whom had never travelled outside America, the Iraqi insurgents, and the residents of Haditha, innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire: all embroiled in a war not of their own making. A very timely reminder of the futility and horror of war and the effect on people involved. Also a reminder that it is very rare for any side to ever have the moral high ground.
My question however is relatively irrelevant but ,in turn, could provide a ubject for a separate documentary/investigation of something of far less import though related to the business of misinformation.
I am obsessed by the ridiculously wealthy position of Manchester United. In European terms- actually winning European tournaments- United are actually minnows and yet they are wealthier than clubs with 2,3 or 4 times the success. Somehow they manage to stay in public conciousness. For example the film "the Day After Tomorrow" featured a Brit toasting "Manchester United" just before he froze to death in a sudden freezing scene.
Now Nick Broomfield has done the same thing in this otherwise magnificent disturbing film. During a Sky Newscast the bottom info bar showed apparently genuine news items.Amongst them:"Wayne Rooney secured Manchester United a UEFA Cup semi-final place in a 2-0 victory over AC Milan". No problem you may think. Unfortunately this result and indeed match did not exist. The nearest recent meeting between the 2 sides resulted in the very usual result of a 2-0 aggregate win to AC Milan.Milan are one of the many clubs which continue to dwarf United in Europe. But, yet again, a little piece of misinformation is fed to the public.Somewhere a Grandpa or Aunt has seen the program and subliminally accepted this lie and when searching for a gift for their niece or grandson will plump for-let's see now-a Manchester United replica shirt.
Thanks Nick
