An American couple (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, pictured) vacationing in Morocco are caught up in a political maelstrom when the wife is accidentally shot by a young boy herding goats. Back in the US, the couple's children travel to Mexico with their housekeeper and her nephew (Gael García Bernal) to attend her son's wedding, but encounter difficulties upon re-crossing the border. In Japan, a deaf teenage girl (Rinko Kikuchi) struggles to connect with her father in the aftermath of her mother's suicide and attempts to use her sexuality to gain the love she craves.

Released in 2006, this multi-narrative drama is in the vein of director Alejandro González Iñárritu's earlier films Amores Perros and 21 Grams. Once again the director demonstrates how apparently disparate lives are interconnected. A plethora of powerhouse performances, including Oscar-nominated turns from breakout star Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza as Mexican housekeeper Amelia, keep the audience involved as the story crosses back and forth between continents and characters. A magnificent film.
