Ivory/Merchant's film stars Madhur Jaffrey as an Indian princess living in London who wishes to celebrate her late father's life. Entertaining her father's old tutor, Cyril Sahib, she shows films of times past and the lifestyle of privilege long gone, hoping this will persuade him to write a glowing biography of her father. But Mason has a different view of those times, believing that if anyone is to be celebrated, it is a man who worked, unsung, with the poor and weak.
