When an horrendous hit knocks professional football legend Cap Rooney (Denis Quaid) out of the game for good a young, and unknown third-stringer replaces him.

Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx) has been segregated to the bench for years now after numerous bad luck events and when he gets the opportunity to play on the field he grasps the moment and shocks everyone with his athletic prowess.

This excellent performance has now forced aging coach, Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino) to re-examine his age-old practices and realise that the game is, as is life, passing him by.

In addition to the pressure Tony is under to make the team a success is the highly strung and aggressive co-owner of the team, Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz) who's desire is to prove herself in this male orientated world of sport by focusing on the marketing and business of football.
