Taut Second World War drama, starring Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch, reflecting the experience of the generation of Australians that fought the war against the Japanese. Jean Paget is among a group of women trapped in Malaya who are forced to walk hundreds of miles in search of food and shelter by the Japanese army. But Australian soldier Joe Harman sneaks food to them from his labour camp. After the war, Jean visits Joe in his home town of Alice Springs, but finds that her life is none too easy. Both Finch and McKenna won BAFTAs for their performances.
