Merchant-Ivory's adaptation of E.M. Forster's novel stars Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith who, on holiday in Florence, encounter the uncouth Denholm Elliott and his son Julian Sands. After an unpleasant incident, the two women return to Surrey but when Elliott and Sands turn up as tenants of a nearby house, all sorts of romantic complications ensue.
