This mellow feelgood comedy-drama, released in 2006, is a bit of an oddity. It reunites director Ridley Scott with Russell Crowe for the first time since Gladiator, but couldn't be more different.

Stockbroker Max Skinner (Crowe, pictured) sees £-signs when he inherits a sprawling Provence vineyard from his late uncle Henry (Albert Finney). All he has to do is sell the land to the highest bidder and lug the cash back to London. But his plans hit a problem when Californian Christie Roberts (Abbie Cornish) turns up, looking for her long-lost dad. Not only does Max have to break the news that Henry's dead, he's also got to sell the vineyard before she stakes her claim. Will the ruthless money man fleece his only living relative? Or will a few weeks in the sun-dappled French countryside put him in touch with his sentimental side (not to mention waitress Marion Cotillard)?

Adapted from the novel by Peter Mayle (the Francophile behind 1989's A Year In Provence), to be honest it's not an utter winner, but is a pleasant, easygoing French lark, worth catching to see Crowe try comedy.
