Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia during the Great Depression, this is the heart-warming story of a close-nit family - the Waltons. Based on the experiences of Earl Hammer Jr. events unfold through the eyes of John Boy Walton (Richard Thomas), an aspiring writer who portrays the trails and tribulations, the joys, struggles and relationships of the Walton family and their small lumber mill business. In this episode, Hobart Shank, a teen-age orphan, returns to the Walton home with hope of getting a professional baseball pitcher contract, but it isn't long before his dream is shattered.
