A dead gambler is found to have thousands of pounds stashed in his flat, leading the detectives to suspect he was receiving insider information from a racing stable. When the wife of the owner dies out riding, the investigation into the illegal betting syndicate heats up further. Meanwhile, Burke's conviction that a former heroin addict and petty criminal has turned the corner is shattered by a revelation, and he must soon decide whether to arrest a killer or do a deal to catch a bigger fish.
