William H Macy stars as Sam Landry, a writer of hard-boiled detective fiction. When his son dies, Landry is desperate to live another life, so he writes himself into his own book and forces his lead character, Umney (also played by Macy), a 1930s detective, to switch places with him. But Landry's problems are only beginning when he realises Umney is trapped in the present day.
