For more than a decade, Inspector Morse (played by the late John Thaw) was Britain's highest-rated TV detective show.
Inspector Morse, of the Oxford Criminal Investigation Department, is perfectly suited to solve crimes. A tough cop who is a trifle too quick to anger, Morse likes a pint. He is also an expert solver of cryptic crossword puzzles and a devotee of classical music.
A bachelor, Morse is receptive to the opposite sex, but not fanatical. He has a first name, but tells everyone just to call him Morse. His assistant, Sergeant Lewis (Kevin Whately), is a good cop with resources and insight of his own. A typical Morse case will feature one, or perhaps more, seemingly perfect but false solutions before the true one is arrived at.
A truly brilliant detective series.
Did you know? The Oxford-based inspector first appeared in a series of books by Colin Dexter. The author has been an on-screen extra in almost every episode of the series. And the show's theme music spells out Morse's name in Morse Code.
