A death row inmate collapses and doctors predict he will die within the hour. Despite their prognosis and the fact that another patient is awaiting his attention, House insists on treating the prisoner. He believes the man's recent suicide attempt is at odds with his request for an appeal - and in probing his history, discovers a cause for the patient's symptoms.

The medic examines a nine-year-old girl with terminal cancer, and decides her illness is not responsible for her hallucinations. Further investigation turns up a large tumour on the child's lung and heart - but when the team discover the growth is benign, they are forced to probe deeper to learn what is affecting her mind.

The medic treats a construction worker who is brought in after a fall and notices the man's fingers are turning purple - a side-effect the accident could not have caused. As the team try different medications, the patient's condition deteriorates and his hand begins to rot - leaving them with no choice but to amputate or watch him die.

The maverick medic treats a stubborn and egotistical doctor who has fallen ill while dispensing tuberculosis medicine to locals in Africa. Although he has all the symptoms of TB, House is convinced something else is responsible for his sickness - but the patient refuses medication to highlight the cause he has been promoting.
