Carter's first day back at work after his summer vacation starts on the wrong foot when he turns up late and shows evidence that he hasn't picked up a book in the time away. Mark faces new challenges as he starts his first day as an attending physician, Morgenstern asks him who he wants to be his Chief Resident and he chooses Kerry Weaver who has just joined the crew. Carol struggles with the severe case of an alcoholic father and his neglected son while Peter and Jeanie cope with the complications of their secret affair.
