When a man collapses and dies in the middle of the annual San Gennaro festival, the team must investigate how the victim ended up with a wooden splinter in his heart. Stella and Danny are called in to investigate and the clues lead them to a pool hall. Meanwhile, Mac and Lindsay investigate the murder of a CFO found decapitated on a bench in Central Park. Hawkes and Flack are also called into action when a suspicious apartment fire kills a ten-year-old chess champion.
