After finding Joyce unconscious on the couch, a terrified slayer calls 911. Unfortunately, it's too late to do anything. The paramedics tell Buffy that her mom had been dead for a while already.

Buffy tells Giles the truth about Dawn and they decide to keep the secret about her origin. Meanwhile, Buffy moves back home to stay together with her sick mother and Dawn. On the eve of Tara's birthday, her big brother Donny, her father and her cousin visit to bring Tara back home, as they believe that she has a demon inside her that will be unleashed on her 20th birthday. Meanwhile, The Beast sends Lei-Ach demons to chase and kill Buffy, but Tara casts a spell on her friends that makes demons invisible, bringing trouble on them all.

Fool For Love. (Series 5, episode 7)
While patrolling the cemetery, Buffy is stabbed by a vampire with her own stake and then saved by Riley. The incident shakes her and so she decides to research how previous slayers were killed. However, she doesn't find any information in the watchers' journals and seeks the information from Spike instead. He describes his life before he became a vampire, how Drusilla sired him, and how Angel and Darla challenged him to kill a slayer.

Shadow. (Series 5, episode 8)
When Joyce goes to the hospital for a CAT scan, the doctor finds a shadow and she is immediately admitted to surgery. After the surgery, the doctor reveals that she has a low-grade brain tumour. Buffy wants to use magic to heal her mother, but Giles, Willow and Tara advise her that it would be too high a risk for a human. Meanwhile, Glory goes to the Magic Box, and the naive Giles sells two powerful components for an ancient spell that will conjure a snake demon to track The Key. When the snake demon finds Dawn in the Magic Box, Buffy and Giles follow the demon, to try and kill it before it gets back to Glory.

Listening to Fear. (Series 5, episode 9)
While Buffy and Dawn stay with Joyce in the hospital, Giles, Willow and Xander patrol the cemetery chasing vampires. Later, while watching the stars, Tara and Willow see a meteor crashing nearby. The Scooby gang soon realises that a demon called Queller has just landed on Earth. Meanwhile, Joyce returns home since her surgery won't happen for another two days, and the Queller arrives at the hospital to attack the mentally ill patients. Due to the compression of the tumour in her brain, Joyce starts to hallucinate and act strangely, but she also sees the truth about Dawn and makes Buffy promise that she will take care of her sister if Joyce dies in surgery. When the Queller comes after Joyce in her home, Buffy must fight it to save Joyce and Dawn.

Into the Woods. (Series 5, episode 10)
After Joyce's surgery, the surgeon tells the Scooby gang that the procedure was successful and the brain tumour was completely removed, but Joyce will need to stay in hospital for observation. While Dawn stays with Anya and Xander, Buffy and Riley spend the night together in the Summers' house. However, Riley leaves in the middle of the night, closely followed by Spike, and visits a vampire nest to feed his addiction for vampire bites. Spike reveals the truth to Buffy, who breaks up with Riley after an argument. When the Initiative invites Riley to be part of an operation in Belize, he gives Buffy an ultimatum.

Buffy gets stung by a demon who's venom causes her to halucinate. One minute she could be sitting there and the next she's in a asylum. She gets so bad that she ties up Willow, Xander and Dawn in the basement where the captured demon is. She watches as her friends fight the demon away from themselves and then back in the asylum she tells her mother Joyce "goodbye". In the real life she kills the monster and the episode ends with her in the asylum.
