Xander is not satisfied with living in the basement of his parents' house and looks for an apartment of his own to live in with Anya. Meanwhile, a demon called Toth attacks Buffy at the Magic Box, before running off. His smell guides Giles and the gang to the city dump, where Toth uses a rod device to blast a ray of light at Buffy, but instead he hits Xander, whose personality is split into two. Toth vanishes and the group leaves the dump with a confident Xander. But later, the insecure Xander awakes in a pile of rubbish, follows his double and meets Willow to tell her about his clone. The situation worsens when the Scoobies discover that if one of the Xanders is destroyed, the other will die. While trying to find a way to unite the Xanders, the gang must also face the evil Toth.
