Set in St. Victor's Accident & Emergency department, A & E is tightly focused on the hospital setting and centres on the work of the A & E team led by Robert Kingsford (Martin Shaw).

Kingsford begins the new series with optimism and energy and appears to be getting his life back on track after the death of his beloved Izzy. He's energised by the changes in A & E, most notably his plans to install Christine as a new Consultant to help share the workload.

But it isn't long before Kingsford and Christine begin to fall out as she tries to establish her new authority. She feels patronised and sidelined by the new trauma surgeon, Jack Turner. Smart and charming, Jack's extremely good at his job and up to date with the most modern surgical procedures.
