Each of the 24 episodes in a series covers one hour, told in real time. The first season begins at midnight on the day of the California Presidential Primary. Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) heads up the government's Counter-Terrorist Unit. He discovers that there's going to be an assassination attempt on Senator Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), an African-American presidential candidate. Bauer faces a battle against the clock to avert disaster. Season two picks up approximately one year after the conclusion of the first season, and finds Jack Bauer and his daughter Kim dealing with the trauma of losing their wife and mother. Just as their lives are beginning to return to normal, now-President David Palmer reaches out to Jack, who is called upon to stop another terrorist plot with global implications. The clock starts ticking for Jack Bauer once again in series 3, when CTU receive word that a deadly virus is just hours away from being released on LA. Eighteen months after the events of season three, Jack returns to CTU in order to save the lives of his girlfriend and new boss, the US Secretary of Defence who have been kidnapped by terrorists. The same terrorist group also begins a series of attacks which forces Jack to take desperate measures which have long-term consequences for both himself and his country. Season five sees Jack come out of hiding to strike back at those responsible for a series of assassinations of people close to him. Soon he realises that the attacks are linked to a government conspiracy to control oil interests in Asia and a terrorist group intent on unleashing a nerve gas attack in LA. Season six sees Jack freed after 20 months of imprisonment in order to help the government stop a devastating bombing campaign by a radical terrorist group. As the threat of nuclear attacks escalates Jack is compelled to stop those responsible, but as one threat is eliminated another soon emerges. Despite his previous heroic actions, season seven begins with Jack on trial for human rights violations. However, after a critical national security breach Jack is soon enlisted to track down the group responsible, pitting him against someone from his past who was thought to be dead. The programme was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran. Ron Howard, one of the show's executive producers, has directed many hit films including A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13 and Splash. He also starred in classic TV comedy Happy Days in the 1970s. 24 has earned rave reviews in America, where it's won the Golden Satellite Award for Best TV Drama, and Kiefer Sutherland picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama. In has also received numerous Emmy nominations and awards including Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Lead Actor for Sutherland. When is 24 next on TV?
