Documentary film-maker Ross McElwee, best known for Sherman's March, turns his camera on North Carolina's tobacco industry. Drawn to the subject by a 50s film, Bright Leaf, starring Gary Cooper and Lauren Bacall, and his own grandfather's fight against tobacco barons, he investigates the then-innocent origins of the tobacco industry, compared with the now terrible health toll it takes on his country.
