Big Strong Girls is a new makeover series with a dual approach to DIY. Designers Brigid Calderhead and Elaine Walker alternate between being "Big on Building" and "Strong on Style".

With a maximum budget of £300, one of the girls takes the "Big on Building" approach and, armed with power tools and building trade secrets, tackles major construction and demolition work. Meanwhile, the "Strong on Style" designer tackles another room with a budget of just £50 and, with a lick of paint and a few well?placed accessories, transforms the whole look.

In this first programme Lara Cartwright, who is seven months pregnant, is keen to help Brigid restore her hall and stairs to their former art deco glory.

A new technique to renovate cracked original floor tiles, a unique way to box in meter cupboards as a corner seat and stripping the banister are key projects.

As a surprise for Lara, Elaine Walker has transformed the box?room junk store into a nursery for the new arrival.

Presented by : Mark Evans.

A BBC Birmingham production for BBC One.
